Senate Moves to Give Veterans Access to MMJ

A monumental step has been made to aid Veterans in getting the help they need and deserve. This last week, the U.S. Senate Appropriations Committee approved an amendment that would prevent the V.A. from financially enforcing a policy that prevents doctors from writing recommendations for medical marijuana in states that it is legal.

Why is this important? Many Veterans suffer from physical and mental ailments after serving our country. The treatment they seek out at V.A. hospitals oftentimes leads to the overprescription of narcotics, which can cause a number of negative side effects, doing more harm than good. However, with medicinal marijuana as a pliable option for treatment, veterans with disorders such as chronic pain and PTSD can find relief without the consequences of hardcore opiates, risk of addiction, or other coinciding complications.

For personal insight from three military veterans who suffered from prescription narcotics but found relief in medical marijuana, read this article.

The CDC recently held a conference where they tenaciously discouraged doctors from prescribing narcotics, stating that there is an “opioid epidemic” that is at the top of the list for the “most pressing public health issues in the United States today.” We have an alternative resource, medical cannabis, and our society is one step closer to utilizing it as a game changing medical resource.
